Editorial Services and Rates
Fiction Light Evaluation: $75
Please send the first 20 pages of your novel and a 2-3 page summary of the rest of the story. I will read it carefully and give some overall advice about your story and what you might want to do to improve its chances for publication. I will also copyedit two pages to give you some idea of where you stand on the basics of grammar and punctuation.
Non-fiction Light Evaluation: $75
Please send the first twenty pages and an outline, chapter by chapter, of the rest of your book. This should not exceed more than 2-4 pages. I will evaluate the subject presentation and give advice for shaping the manuscript. I will also copyedit 2 pages to give you some idea of where you stand on the basics of grammar and punctuation.
Full book evaluation: $100 plus $1.00 a page. Includes all of the above with a more detailed chapter-by-chapter evaluation.
Copy Editing: $40 an hour. Plan on it taking 3-5 pages an hour, depending on how clean the original copy is. If you want to be deeply involved, I can use Track Changes so that you can see, accept, or reject any changes I suggest, but this takes a little more time because of the back-and-forth nature of the work. This is the most important step before publication, so please be sure you have made all the changes to your manuscript before beginning this process. |
What is the difference between
Editing and Copyediting?
Editing includes everything from content to style. How a book or article is organized or a plot unfolds can make a big difference. Editing helps to put the big pieces together in the best way possible. I may suggest, for example, that you combine two chapters or divide one chapter into two. I may suggest another way to present your information, or give tips about strengthening a plot. Editing trims out wordiness and streamlines the book.
Copyediting deals with the fine details of grammar and punctuation. A copy editor must review carefully every single sentence for spelling, punctuation, and structure. There can be no speed-reading. It is costly and time-consuming and very, very necessary. Don’t jump to this stage unless you are very sure you will not be making any further editorial changes on your manuscript. |
